The abundance of quality fly fishing combined with the truly breath-taking setting of Ballycroy National Park, the close management of the fish stocks and the local expertise of the Guides, make Shean Lodge Fishery a spectacular fishing destination. The lodge, two beats on the Owenduff River, and three stocked brown trout lakes are available to avid anglers during the fishing season. The lodge itself is also available for anyone who wants to get away from it all at any other time of year.
Our local Guides are an invaluable source of information on where to find the best fish and because the river comprises of over forty pools of varying depths, you will be glad of their assistance and vast expertise. Guides are always on-hand to impart their local knowledge and to advise on the best locations based on weather conditions and seasonality. A Guide is provided as part of the rental fee of the Lodge and Beat One.
Beat One is provided for rental with Shean Lodge itself as accommodation for your party. You will have access to 25 Named Pools as shown on the map below, as well as:
• Tarsaughaun River
• Trout Lakes
Beat One rental commences at 6.00 PM Friday and ends at 11.00 AM the following Friday.
River and Lakes Information
The upper beat of the Shean Lodge Fishery is located within 50 meters of the river. Included in the package is Shean Lodge accommodation, for more details click here. Beat One provides fly only angling for six rods on twenty-five named pools on both banks over approximately 4 kms of river.
The exceptions to this rule are the two pools above the Boundary Pool which can only be fished from the east bank. Nearly all the river can be fished from the banks with very little wading required; except where an angler wishes to cross the river for their own reasons. The west bank is favoured by most anglers, due to the ease of access by any reasonably fit person. The east bank, on the other hand, is more challenging, but more than possible to fish by an active person. It has often proven to be well worth the effort.
Apart from one or two small sections, our stretch of the Owenduff River is mobile phone friendly throughout.

TARSAUGHAUN RIVER
Tarsaughaun River is a tributary of the Owenduff River can be fished by two Rods by arrangement with our resident Guide. The Shean Lodge Fishery is on the south bank only and extends for about 2 km. It has more than ten recognisable pools. It is often fished if the main river is dirty or too high. The Tarsaughaun (if the gods are with you!) is an unforgettable angling experience. What makes it different is the tumbling water of the mountain stream, where in many places it has cut its way through solid sandstone to get access to the main river. Salmon and sea trout and grilse can be taken. The river begins to fish from mid-May and, if there is a run on the river, can be very productive until the end of the season.
THE TROUT LAKES
Three Trout Lakes can be fished by arrangement with our resident Guide. They are stocked with brown trout some of which are being taken weighing up to 2 kilos. The most recent stocking was in 2018.
