SHEAN ANECDOTES

In this part of the web site we would like to share with you some of the history of Shean Lodge and its guests, which has been in our family since the 1940's, as well as some of the events and changes that occur throughout the year in this most beautiful part of Ireland, County Mayo.

Paul Henry

Paul Henry is one of Ireland’s foremost artists. He stayed for two years in Shean when he acted as paymaster for the Congested Districts Board for Ireland.

A WASP

She told how she had been chosen from among thousands of applications. They were given six-month training and flew B17 aircraft across the Atlantic.

W.H. Maxwell

William Hamilton Maxwell is not really a neighbour as such, his influence is so great that a little about his life and times is definitely part of the Shean story.

Current Affairs

As a healthy young salmon, there's no question I am an unbelievably popular fish, For I don't have a match as wonderful catch Or, regrettably, served as a dish.

John McCormack

He became one of the world’s most popular singers. Furthermore, one of the best-paid artists of his day, he moved to the USA and became an American citizen.

Charles James Haughey

Mr Charles Haughey asked Eric Craigie to teach him to fish for salmon. Eric was pleased to arrange lessons for him in Shean Lodge Fishery.
